Godetia – Scarlet

Price range: $2.50 through $69.75

Godetia Scarlet is an improved variety of a native wildflower found in western North America, ranging from California to British Columbia. This plant belongs to the Clarkia genus, named after Captain William Clark, a prominent pioneer of the United States during the Lewis and Clark Expedition. As a member of the Evening Primrose family, Godetia Scarlet is known for its vivid scarlet blooms that strongly attract bees and other pollinators.

This flower thrives when mass planted and is ideal for creating colorful borders or adding vibrant splashes of color to wildflower gardens and naturalized areas. Its bright scarlet flowers stand out beautifully when growing among grasses and native plants.

Godetia Scarlet prefers full sun and well-drained soils with low to moderate nutrient levels. It adapts well to sandy, alkaline, and even slightly saline soils. When planted in nutrient-rich soil, Godetia tends to produce more foliage at the expense of flowering.

The seeds germinate best in cooler weather, and the plant does not tolerate hot or humid climates well. Temperatures consistently above 80°F (27°C) can cause poor growth or failure to bloom. Because Godetia has a delicate root system, it does not transplant well and should be sown directly outdoors, either in the ground or in pots left in place.

For gardeners in western North America, fall planting is recommended to take advantage of cooler, wetter conditions. In colder or eastern regions, sow seeds in early spring after the last frost. Additionally, Godetia Scarlet makes an excellent cut flower, prized for its long-lasting, vibrant blooms.
