Cosmos – Sulphur Klondyke Orange
$2.50 – $27.75Price range: $2.50 through $27.75
The Sulphur Klondyke Orange Cosmos thrives in hot, arid climates and is native to Central America. This resilient species can tolerate temperatures reaching 100°F (38°C) and above, making it ideal for warm and dry regions.
Cosmos sulphureus produces smaller flowers compared to the larger Cosmos bipinnatus species, with vibrant orange blooms that tend to flower later in the growing season, providing extended color in your garden.
In dry, warm climates, these seeds can be planted in the fall. However, in colder or wetter regions, such as the Northwest US, it’s best to sow the seeds in late spring (around May) when the soil has sufficiently warmed. Heat is essential for germination; otherwise, the seeds may remain dormant or rot in the ground.
This variety prefers well-drained, moderately infertile soil, as over-fertilizing can cause excessive growth that results in weak stems and instability. The Sulphur Klondyke Orange Cosmos is low-maintenance and can thrive with minimal care once established.
Like other cosmos, this flower attracts birds, bees, and butterflies, enhancing pollination and adding life to your garden. It also makes an excellent cut flower for fresh floral arrangements.
Though the seeds can be started indoors, they generally perform better when directly sown outdoors in their permanent location.
