Godetia – Lilac

Price range: $2.50 through $69.75

Godetia Lilac is an improved variety of a native wildflower found in western North America, ranging from California to British Columbia. This plant belongs to the Clarkia genus, named in honor of Captain William Clark, a key figure in the Lewis and Clark Expedition. As a member of the Evening Primrose family, Godetia is well-known for its vibrant, colorful blooms that strongly attract bees and other pollinators.

Godetia Lilac thrives when mass planted, making it an excellent choice for colorful borders and wildflower meadows. Its bright lilac-colored flowers stand out beautifully when grown among grasses and native plants, adding a splash of color to naturalized or garden settings.

This flower prefers full sun and grows best in well-drained soils with low to moderate nutrient levels. It adapts well to sandy, alkaline, and even slightly saline soils. When planted in rich or heavily fertilized soil, Godetia tends to produce more foliage with fewer blooms.

Godetia seeds germinate best in cooler weather and do not tolerate hot or humid conditions well. Temperatures above 80°F (27°C) can cause the plants to decline or fail to bloom properly. Since Godetia is sensitive to transplanting, it is best to sow seeds directly outdoors, either in the ground or in pots that will remain in place.

For gardeners in western North America, fall planting is recommended to take advantage of cooler, wetter conditions. In eastern or colder regions, planting in early spring after the last frost is preferred. Additionally, Godetia Lilac makes an excellent cut flower, with long-lasting blooms that brighten floral arrangements.
