Lupine – Small Flowered Bi-Color

Small Flowered Bi-Color Lupine is native to western North America ranging between British Columbia and California and west of the Cascade Mountain Range.  This flower is found to grow in open prairies at low elevations.  When in the Northwest, plant this lupine outside during the fall for the best results.  Most natives need cold weather to initiate germination.  Many natives take longer to get out of the ground and grow, so allow 2-3 years for full establishment.  Patience is necessary when growing native flowers.

*Just a note about perennials:  Most perennials will not bloom the first year they are planted.  They establish a plant the first year and then bloom the second and every year after that.  Annuals will give you color the first year you plant them and then can reseed themselves if they like where they are growing.   This is why perennials tend to be more expensive.  It takes twice as long to get seed off of the plant than an annual when initially planting.
