Cascade Shade Turf Mix is a cool-season lawn seed blend designed for lawns where shade tolerance, fine texture, and good lawn density are important. The mix contains  80% Creeping Red Fescue and 20% Turf-Type Perennial Ryegrass, making it particularly well suited for partially shaded residential lawns.

Creeping Red Fescue provides the foundation of the mix, offering fine-textured turf and good adaptation to shade. Perennial Ryegrass adds faster germination, quick establishment, and improved tolerance of regular foot traffic. The mix is also useful for lawn renovation, overseeding, patching thin areas, and providing ground cover where sunlight is limited.

Seed Mix

• 80% Creeping Red Fescue — A fine-textured cool-season grass with good shade tolerance. Its creeping growth habit helps improve lawn density and allows it to gradually fill thin or open areas, providing some natural self-repair and improved turf coverage over time.

Cascade Shade Turf Mix establishes well under favorable cool-season conditions. The Perennial Ryegrass component provides quick initial germination and coverage, while the Creeping Red Fescue develops into the primary turf over time.

Prepare a firm seedbed and maintain consistent moisture during germination and early establishment.

Sun & Shade

Cascade Shade Turf Mix is designed primarily for partial shade and is a strong choice for lawns that receive less sunlight than typical full-sun areas.

Creeping Red Fescue provides the mix’s primary shade tolerance. However, grass still requires some sunlight to remain healthy. Areas with dense, continuous shade may not support a thick lawn even with a shade-tolerant seed mix.

Water & Drought Tolerance

Creeping Red Fescue has good tolerance of dry conditions once established, but the mix performs best with adequate moisture during establishment and periods of active growth.

Lawns growing beneath trees may require additional water because tree roots can compete with turf for available moisture.

Central Oregon — Use With Irrigation

Cascade Shade Turf Mix can be used in Central Oregon with irrigation. The region’s dry summers and temperature extremes can be challenging, so adequate moisture is important for maintaining healthy turf.

Eastern Oregon — Use With Irrigation

The mix can be grown in Eastern Oregon where irrigation is available. Hot, dry summers can stress cool-season turf, making supplemental water important for maintaining green, actively growing grass.

Northern U.S. — Good Choice

Cascade Shade Turf Mix can perform well in many northern areas with cool growing conditions and adequate moisture. It is particularly useful for partially shaded lawns, although severe winter conditions may affect long-term persistence in colder regions.

Southern U.S. — Good Choice for Suitable Areas

The mix can perform well in cooler areas of the Southern U.S. and transition zone. In the hottest parts of the South, summer heat can stress cool-season grasses, so the mix is better suited to cooler locations or seasonal use.

Maintenance

Cascade Shade Turf Mix benefits from regular mowing, appropriate fertilization, and adequate moisture.

Shaded turf generally grows more slowly than turf in full sun. Avoid removing more than one-third of the grass height when mowing, and avoid excessively short mowing that can further stress grass growing under limited light.

Lawn Repair & Ground Cover

Cascade Shade Turf Mix is useful for repairing thin or bare areas where limited sunlight has caused turf to decline.

The Perennial Ryegrass provides quick initial coverage, while Creeping Red Fescue gradually fills in and contributes to long-term lawn density. Its creeping growth habit can provide some natural self-repair as the lawn develops.

Planting

Preferred planting seasons: Spring and Fall

Fall is generally the preferred season for cool-season lawn establishment, although spring planting can also be successful when soil temperatures and moisture are suitable.
