Coreopsis – Plains Dwarf Red
$2.50 – $51.00Price range: $2.50 through $51.00
Plains Dwarf Red Coreopsis is a compact, fast-growing annual wildflower that adds bold color to garden beds, borders, and wildflower plantings. A dwarf cultivar of Coreopsis tinctoria—also known as Plains Coreopsis or Golden Tickseed—this variety typically grows to a height of 10 to 12 inches, making it ideal for small spaces or containers.
Native to the central United States, Coreopsis tinctoria thrives in full sun and well-drained soils. It is adaptable to a wide range of soil types, including poor or sandy soils, and requires only average watering. While it tolerates drought once established, it is less tolerant of prolonged heat and humidity, particularly in more southern climates.
Seeds can be sown directly outdoors either in fall (in regions with mild winters) or early spring (in areas with colder winters). Though it can be started indoors, any transplanting should be done while the seedlings are still very small to avoid root disturbance. The slim, lightweight seeds germinate quickly and the plant grows rapidly under favorable conditions.
Plains Coreopsis produces vibrant daisy-like blooms, often in shades of deep red and gold, depending on the cultivar. Regular deadheading will encourage a longer and more abundant blooming period, typically lasting from late spring through mid-summer.
This cheerful wildflower is not only low maintenance but also a great attractor of pollinators such as bees and butterflies. It is an excellent addition to pollinator gardens, wildflower meadows, and naturalized landscapes.
