Rising Sun Turf Mix is a cool-season lawn seed blend designed for durability, drought tolerance, shade tolerance, and performance across a wide range of climates. The combination of Tall Fescue, Perennial Ryegrass, and Chewings Fescue produces an attractive, durable lawn with good tread tolerance and a relatively fine texture.

With 45% Turf-Type Tall Fescue, 40% Turf-Type Perennial Ryegrass, and 15% Chewings Fescue, the mix balances deep-rooted durability with rapid establishment and improved performance in partially shaded areas. It is a strong choice for residential lawns, high-traffic areas, lawn renovation, and locations where both sun and shade occur.

Seed Mix

• 45% Turf-Type Tall Fescue— Provides the foundation of the mix with strong root development, good drought tolerance, and excellent durability. Tall Fescue helps the lawn remain productive under heat, moderate drought, and regular foot traffic.
• 40% Turf-Type Perennial Ryegrass— Provides rapid germination, quick establishment, attractive green color, and good wear tolerance. It helps provide fast ground coverage while the slower-establishing Tall Fescue develops.

Chewings Fescue adds fine texture and helps the mix perform in partially shaded areas.

For best results, prepare a firm, smooth seedbed and maintain consistent moisture during germination and early establishment.

Sun & Shade

Rising Sun Turf Mix performs well in full sun to partial shade.

Tall Fescue and Perennial Ryegrass perform particularly well with good sunlight, while Chewings Fescue provides additional shade tolerance. The mix can therefore work well in yards with a combination of sunny and partially shaded areas.

Dense, continuous shade can still limit turf growth, and no cool-season lawn mix will perform well without sufficient light.

Water & Drought Tolerance

Rising Sun Turf Mix has good drought tolerance compared with many cool-season lawn blends, largely because of the Tall Fescue component.

Tall Fescue develops a deep root system that allows it to access moisture deeper in the soil. Perennial Ryegrass and Chewings Fescue are less drought tolerant, so irrigation may still be necessary during prolonged periods of heat and drought.

Western Oregon — Excellent Choice

Rising Sun Turf Mix is well suited to Western Oregon’s cool, moist climate and can provide durable turf for residential lawns. Its combination of Tall Fescue and Perennial Ryegrass also makes it useful where lawns experience regular foot traffic.

Southern Oregon — Excellent Choice

The mix is a strong choice for Southern Oregon, particularly where summer irrigation is available. Tall Fescue provides useful drought tolerance while Perennial Ryegrass contributes rapid establishment and attractive turf.

Central Oregon — Good Choice With Irrigation

Rising Sun Turf Mix can perform well in Central Oregon with irrigation. The Tall Fescue component provides useful drought tolerance, but the Perennial Ryegrass and Chewings Fescue require adequate moisture during hot, dry periods.

Eastern Oregon — Good Choice With Irrigation

The mix can be used in Eastern Oregon where irrigation is available. Tall Fescue provides better drought tolerance than many cool-season grasses, but summer heat and dry conditions can significantly stress the Perennial Ryegrass and Chewings Fescue components.

Northern U.S. — Good Choice

Rising Sun Turf Mix can be used across many areas of the Northern U.S. where cool-season turf grasses are appropriate. It provides a combination of durability, rapid establishment, and fine texture.

In areas with severe winters, local winter conditions should be considered when selecting a turf blend.

Southern U.S. — Good Choice

Rising Sun Turf Mix is particularly useful in cooler parts of the Southern U.S. and the transition zone. Its Tall Fescue component provides better heat and drought tolerance than many cool-season lawn grasses, while Perennial Ryegrass provides quick establishment.

In the hottest parts of the South, prolonged summer heat may still cause cool-season turf to decline, and warm-season grasses may be better suited to permanent lawns.

Maintenance

Rising Sun Turf Mix benefits from regular mowing, appropriate fertilization, and adequate moisture during periods of active growth.

Avoid removing more than one-third of the grass height when mowing. Maintaining an appropriate mowing height can help support deeper roots and improve the lawn’s ability to tolerate heat and drought.

Rising Sun Turf Mix is useful for establishing new turf and repairing thin or damaged lawn areas.

Preferred planting seasons: Spring and Fall
