Yard Master Mix is an excellent choice for residential lawns in the Pacific Northwest under ideal growing conditions. This cool-season lawn blend combines  80% Turf-Type Perennial Ryegrass with 20% Creeping Red Fescue to produce a dense, dark-green, durable lawn with fine to medium-textured foliage. The mix establishes quickly, tolerates regular foot traffic, and performs well in areas with full sun to partial shade.

Perennial Ryegrass provides rapid germination and strong early growth, while Creeping Red Fescue adds fine texture and improved performance in partially shaded areas. The mix can also be used where rapid, durable ground cover is desired.

Seed Mix

• 80% Turf-Type Perennial Ryegrass — A fast-establishing cool-season grass that produces dense, durable turf with attractive green color and good tolerance of regular foot traffic. Its rapid establishment makes it useful for new lawns, renovation, and ground-cover applications.
• 20% Creeping Red Fescue — A fine-textured cool-season grass that performs well in partial shade and helps improve lawn density and coverage. Its creeping growth habit allows it to gradually fill thin or open areas, providing some natural self-repair and improved turf coverage over time.

Establishment & Growth

Yard Master Mix establishes quickly under favorable conditions. Perennial Ryegrass provides fast germination and early turf development, while Creeping Red Fescue contributes additional coverage as the lawn matures.

Prepare a firm, smooth seedbed and maintain consistent moisture during germination and early establishment.

Sun & Shade

Yard Master Mix performs best in full sun to partial shade.

Perennial Ryegrass performs strongest with good sunlight, while Creeping Red Fescue provides improved shade tolerance. For areas with heavy or dense shade, a grass blend specifically formulated for deep shade may be a better choice.

Water & Drought Tolerance

Yard Master Mix performs best with adequate moisture. Perennial Ryegrass is not highly drought tolerant and can experience stress during prolonged periods of heat and dryness.

In areas with dry summers, irrigation can help maintain green, dense turf. Established lawns may slow growth or become dormant during extended drought.

Regional Fit

Western Oregon — Excellent Choice

Yard Master Mix is well suited to Western Oregon’s cool, moist climate. The growing conditions support strong establishment and long-term performance for residential lawns.

Southern Oregon — Good Choice

Yard Master Mix can perform well in Southern Oregon where adequate moisture is available. Irrigation may be needed during hot, dry summers to maintain green, dense turf.

Central Oregon — Use With Irrigation

The mix can be used in Central Oregon with irrigation. Dry summers and temperature extremes can be challenging, making supplemental water important for consistent summer performance.

Eastern Oregon — Use With Irrigation

Yard Master Mix can be grown in Eastern Oregon where irrigation is available. The Perennial Ryegrass component is less tolerant of prolonged heat and drought, so summer irrigation is generally necessary for green, actively growing turf.

Northern U.S. — Good Choice

Yard Master Mix can be used in many northern areas with moderate summers and adequate moisture. In regions with severe winters, local climate and winter conditions should be considered when selecting a lawn grass.

Southern U.S. — Good Choice for Suitable Areas

Yard Master Mix can perform well in cooler parts of the Southern U.S. and transition-zone areas. In the hottest parts of the South, Perennial Ryegrass may struggle during summer and the mix is better suited to cooler conditions or seasonal overseeding.

Maintenance

Yard Master Mix benefits from regular mowing, appropriate fertilization, and adequate moisture.

Mow regularly and avoid removing more than one-third of the grass height at a time. During hot or dry weather, irrigation can help maintain turf density and color.

Livestock Warning

Yard Master Mix is intended for lawn and turf use and is not suitable for livestock forage.

The mix contains Turf-Type Perennial Ryegrass. Turf-type ryegrass may contain endophytes that can be harmful to grazing livestock. For pasture or hay production, use a forage-type Perennial Ryegrass or forage blend specifically intended for livestock.

Planting

Preferred planting seasons: Spring and Fall

Fall is generally the preferred season for cool-season lawn establishment, although spring planting can also be successful when soil temperatures and moisture are suitable.

Preferred soil temperature when planting: 50–65°F

For best results, prepare a firm seedbed, distribute seed evenly, and maintain adequate moisture during germination and early growth.

Seeding rates: (For reference there is 43,560 sq. ft in an acre)

• To sow a new turf lawn:  200 – 300 lb./acre
• To over-seed an existing lawn:  100 – 150 lb./acre
