Poppy – California Sundew (Tufted Poppy)

Price range: $2.50 through $126.00

The California Sundew Poppy, also known as Tufted Poppy or Foothill Poppy, is a charming, small annual native from Oregon to Baja California. Its compact size makes it ideal for edging, container plantings, or low-water gardens, where it adds a splash of vibrant color without overwhelming surrounding plants.

Like other California Poppies (Eschscholzia californica), the Sundew variety thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, and it performs best when sown directly outdoors, as it does not transplant well. This variety is drought-tolerant once established and can reseed itself naturally, although it is frost-sensitive and will not survive in colder climates. Gardeners in USDA Zones 7–10 can plant seeds in fall for early-season blooms, while spring sowing works well in cooler regions.

While the species includes the classic bright orange annuals, as well as multicolored and double-petaled varieties, the California Sundew stands out for its petite stature and elegant, tufted blooms, making it a delightful addition to wildflower meadows, borders, and containers.
