Godetia – Double Azalea

Price range: $2.50 through $40.20

Godetia Double Azalea Mix (Clarkia amoena var. whitneyi) is a stunning, improved variety of a wildflower native to the western regions of North America, particularly from California to British Columbia. It belongs to the Clarkia genus, named in honor of Captain William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and is a member of the Evening Primrose family.

This beautiful annual is prized for its richly colored, double blooms that resemble miniature azaleas. Flowers come in a range of vibrant shades including pink, rose, lavender, and white, and bloom abundantly on upright, branching stems. Godetia Double Azalea is a strong attractor of pollinators, especially bees, and is an excellent choice for adding bold color to borders, wildflower plantings, and cutting gardens.

Godetia thrives in full sun and prefers lean, well-drained soils. It is particularly well-suited to sandy, alkaline, or even slightly saline conditions. As with many members of the Evening Primrose family, it performs best in soils low in fertility. In rich or heavily amended soils, the plant may produce excessive foliage with fewer blooms.

This flower is not tolerant of high heat or humidity, and temperatures consistently above 80°F (27°C) can cause it to fail. It germinates best in cooler weather and should be sown directly outdoors, as it does not transplant well. In western North America, fall planting is ideal to take advantage of mild winters. In colder or eastern climates, seeds should be planted in early spring after the risk of frost has passed.

Godetia Double Azalea also makes a long-lasting and beautiful cut flower. With its striking blooms and natural resilience, it brings both color and ecological value to a variety of garden settings.
