Bachelor Button – Polka Dot Mix

Price range: $2.50 through $18.90

Bachelor Button ‘Polka Dot Mix’ is a vibrant, eye-catching blend of vivid blue, pink, purple, and white blooms, offering a cheerful burst of color to any garden. This classic mix features tall, upright plants—typically reaching 24 to 36 inches in height—making it an ideal choice for cut flower gardens, borders, wildflower meadows, and pollinator-friendly landscapes.

Like all Centaurea cyanus varieties, this mix prefers full sun and well-drained soil, and is highly drought-tolerant once established. It is a hardy annual that grows well across a wide range of climates. In USDA Zones 7–10, seeds can be fall planted, allowing plants to overwinter and bloom earlier in spring. In cooler regions, sow seeds directly outdoors in early spring as soon as the soil is workable. While indoor starting is possible, direct sowing is typically more successful, as the plants form a taproot that can be disturbed during transplanting.

Bachelor Buttons are known for being incredibly easy to grow from seed, making them a favorite for gardeners of all experience levels. Their long-lasting blooms are excellent for fresh cut flower arrangements, and their pollinator-attracting nature makes them valuable additions to eco-conscious gardens. These plants are also generally deer- and rabbit-resistant, and thrive in low-maintenance settings.

We also offer a shorter companion variety, Bachelor Button – Dwarf Polka Dot Mix, which features the same vibrant color range in a more compact form, perfect for containers, edging, or smaller garden spaces. Additionally, individual color varieties are available for those looking to create a more curated garden palette.

SPECIAL NOTE: Bachelor Buttons (Centaurea cyanus) are considered invasive or regulated in certain U.S. regions. They are prohibited in North Carolina, monitored in Washington State, and listed as invasive in West Virginia, Georgia, and parts of eastern Oregon. If you live in one of these areas or are concerned about their spread, you can still enjoy them responsibly. Regularly cutting the flowers for bouquets and deadheading spent blooms will help prevent self-seeding. Monitor their growth closely to keep them from spreading beyond your intended planting area. As always, check with your state’s Department of Agriculture or consult the USDA’s invasive species list before planting.
