Bachelor Button – Dwarf Blue

Price range: $2.50 through $21.60

Bachelor Button ‘Dwarf Blue’ is a compact, low-growing variety of the classic cornflower, ideal for small spaces, borders, and container gardens. This hardy annual is known for its striking, vivid blue blooms that appear more densely packed due to its shorter stature—typically growing 12 to 24 inches tall.

Bachelor Buttons prefer full sun and well-drained soil, and are among the easiest flowers to grow from seed, making them a great choice for beginner gardeners. While seeds can be started indoors, direct sowing outdoors is usually more successful, especially in cooler climates. In USDA Zones 7–10, fall planting allows the plant to establish over winter and produce early spring blooms. In colder zones, sow directly outdoors in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked.

The ‘Dwarf Blue’ variety maintains all the toughness of its taller relatives while offering a more compact, bushy growth habit, with closer-set blooms that provide a rich splash of color at lower levels in the garden. Like other Bachelor Buttons, it makes an excellent cut flower, attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, and is generally deer- and rabbit-resistant.

For extended flowering, deadhead regularly to encourage new blooms and prevent self-seeding, especially in areas where the plant may naturalize.

SPECIAL NOTE: Bachelor Buttons (Centaurea cyanus) are considered invasive or regulated in certain U.S. regions. They are prohibited in North Carolina, monitored in Washington State, and listed as invasive in West Virginia, Georgia, and parts of eastern Oregon. If you live in one of these areas or are concerned about their spread, you can still enjoy them responsibly. Regularly cutting the flowers for bouquets and deadheading spent blooms will help prevent self-seeding. Monitor their growth closely to keep them from spreading beyond your intended planting area. As always, check with your state’s Department of Agriculture or consult the USDA’s invasive species list before planting.
