Cosmos – Sulphur Dwarf Orange
$2.50 – $66.00Price range: $2.50 through $66.00
The Sulphur Dwarf Orange Cosmos thrives in hot, arid climates and is native to Central America. This resilient plant can tolerate temperatures of 100°F (38°C) and higher, making it well suited for warm and dry environments.
Cosmos sulphureus features smaller, vibrant orange flowers compared to the larger blooms of Cosmos bipinnatus. This variety typically blooms later in the growing season, offering extended color when many other flowers begin to fade.
In dry, warm regions, it can be planted in the fall for continuous blooms. However, in colder or wetter climates, it is best to sow seeds in the spring after the soil has warmed, since Cosmos sulphureus seeds require heat for germination. Without adequate warmth, the seeds may remain dormant or rot.
This variety performs best in well-drained, moderately infertile soil. Over-fertilization can cause excessive, weak growth, leading to instability. The Sulphur Dwarf Orange Cosmos is low maintenance and can sustain itself with minimal care once established.
Like other cosmos varieties, it attracts birds, bees, and butterflies, promoting a healthy and lively garden ecosystem. It also makes an excellent cut flower for fresh floral arrangements.
While seeds can be started indoors, the plants thrive best when directly sown outdoors in their permanent location.
