Godetia – Farwell To Spring – Native
$2.50 – $111.00Price range: $2.50 through $111.00
Godetia Farewell to Spring is a native wildflower of western North America, commonly found from California to British Columbia. It belongs to the Clarkia genus, named after Captain William Clark of the historic Lewis and Clark Expedition. This vibrant flower is a member of the Evening Primrose family and is well known for its bright, colorful blooms that attract bees and other pollinators.
Godetia thrives when mass planted and makes an excellent, eye-catching border plant. Its striking flowers, which come in shades of pink, lavender, rose, and white, stand out beautifully when growing among native grasses and other meadow plants.
This species prefers well-drained soils with low to moderate nutrient levels. It tolerates sandy, alkaline, and even slightly saline soils, making it adaptable to a range of growing conditions. However, planting Godetia in overly rich or fertile soil often results in excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowering.
Godetia seeds germinate best in cooler weather and the plant does not tolerate hot or humid climates well. Temperatures above 80°F (27°C) can negatively impact growth and flowering. Because Godetia has a delicate root system, it does not transplant well and should be sown directly outdoors, either in the ground or in containers that remain in place.
For gardeners in western North America, fall planting is recommended to take advantage of cooler, wetter conditions. In eastern or colder regions, sow seeds in early spring after the last frost. Besides its ornamental appeal, Godetia Farewell to Spring also makes an excellent cut flower, prized for its long-lasting, delicate blooms.
