Northwest Native Salt-Tolerant Grass Mix

The Northwest Native Salt Tolerant Economy Mix is a blend of three perennial grasses suited to moist sites and areas where some salt exposure may occur.

These grasses are well adapted to a variety of Northwest conditions and can be useful for coastal landscapes, wet meadows, shoreline areas, roadsides, naturalized areas, and other sites where moisture and moderate salt exposure may be a concern.

Individual species vary in their tolerance to salt, moisture, and flooding, so performance will depend on the specific conditions of the planting site.

Fall Planting

Fall is an excellent planting season for this mix in the Pacific Northwest.

Plant after the heat of summer has subsided and temperatures have cooled. September through late fall can be a good planting window depending on your location and weather conditions.

Fall planting allows the seed to take advantage of natural fall and winter moisture. Some seed may germinate and establish before winter, while other seed may remain dormant and germinate naturally as conditions become favorable in spring.

Spring Planting

Spring planting is also an option.

In the Pacific Northwest, March and April can be good months for spring planting, depending on local temperatures, soil conditions, and moisture.

Plant when the soil is workable and beginning to warm. Provide adequate moisture during germination and early establishment.

Establishment & Long-Term Growth

All three species in this mix are perennial grasses. They may germinate and establish at different rates, so the planting may not appear uniform during the first growing season.

Once established, these grasses can provide long-term vegetation and ground cover in suitable conditions.

Choosing the Right Site

This mix is particularly useful for moist areas where some salt exposure is present, including coastal and other sites where salt may be a concern.

Salt tolerance does not mean these grasses can withstand unlimited salt or prolonged exposure to seawater. Site conditions such as drainage, moisture, salt concentration, and duration of exposure will all affect establishment and long-term performance.
