Poppy – California Red Chief

The California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) is a hardy western wildflower known for its love of full sun, dry conditions, and well-drained soils. Like all poppies in this species, ‘Red Chief’ is best sown directly outdoors, as it does not transplant well. In mild climates it may behave as a short-lived perennial, although it is typically grown as an annual in colder regions due to its sensitivity to frost. Gardeners in USDA Zones 7–10 can plant seeds in fall for an early flush of blooms, while spring sowing is ideal in cooler areas.
