Ryegrass – Perennial (Forage-Type)

Forage Type Perennial Ryegrass is a great grass to choose by itself to overseed an existing area or use in a mix with other grasses or legumes.  This grass is quick to establish and highly palatable for forage use.  It can be grazed close and often.  This is not a variety for use as a lawn.  It is a safe variety for livestock to graze on such as sheep, cattle and horses.  This grass can grow on a variety of soil types but performs best in well-drained fertile soils.  In warmer climate areas this grass can work to overseed with in the winter when planted with sufficient moisture levels.  The Perennial Ryegrass does not perform the best during very hot or cold weather.  This grass works well for use as hay but can have a higher moisture which can cause it to take it a little longer to dry than some other grass.

Grazing can begin with this grass when it reaches about 8-10″ tall.  This grass should be firmly rooted before allowing animals to graze on it.

Note: Be careful with grazing horses for long periods in the spring and fall when grass is lush and green in a growing stage which can cause foundering.  Consult your veterinarian for the best advice.

The broadcast rate for seeding is 60 – 75 pounds per acre.

The seed drill rate for seeding in rows is 30 pounds per acre.

Reseeding of around 5 lbs an acre in the fall or spring every year can help maintain a healthy stand.
