Clarkia – Elegant White
$2.50 – $69.75Price range: $2.50 through $69.75
Mountain Garland (Clarkia unguiculata), also known as Elegant Clarkia, is a graceful annual wildflower native to the western United States. Renowned for its tall, slender stems and tiered blooms, this species adds vertical interest and delicate beauty to wildflower meadows, borders, and cottage-style gardens. A close relative of Godetia (Clarkia amoena), it shares many of the same easy-to-grow, cool-season traits.
The ‘Elegant White’ variety is especially prized for its pure white blossoms, which lend a sense of lightness, softness, and elegance to mixed plantings. These blooms appear in stacked whorls along upright stems, standing out beautifully against green foliage or darker companion flowers. The clean white petals offer a striking contrast and are ideal for moon gardens or cut flower arrangements with a refined, natural look.
Mountain Garland typically reaches 2 to 3 feet in height and may require light staking in exposed or crowded areas. It performs reliably across USDA zones 1–11, particularly in climates with cooler evening temperatures. This plant is not tolerant of extreme heat or humidity, making it best suited to temperate regions.
Flowers bloom sequentially from the base to the tip of the stem, giving a long-lasting floral display. As a cut flower, Elegant White is both subtle and showy. For best vase life, harvest stems when lower flowers begin to open and buds remain near the top, allowing continued blooming after cutting.
Plant in full sun to partial shade in well-drained, low-nutrient soils, particularly those low in nitrogen. Rich soil tends to encourage lush foliage at the expense of blooms. Like Godetia, Mountain Garland prefers cool, dry conditions and struggles in hot or tropical climates.
This variety should be direct-sown outdoors, as it does not transplant well. In zones 7–10, fall planting ensures early spring blooms. In colder zones, sow in early spring, just after the last frost.
With its elegant white flowers and soft, ethereal presence, this Mountain Garland variety is perfect for gardeners seeking a classic, light-reflective wildflower that complements any planting palette—whether used on its own or mixed with more vivid colors.
