Coreopsis – Plains Tall
$2.50 – $35.25Price range: $2.50 through $35.25
Plains Tall Coreopsis is a showy, fast-growing annual wildflower native to much of the central United States. Also known as Golden Tickseed, this species is a standout in wildflower plantings, reaching heights of 32 to 48 inches and producing abundant, eye-catching blooms that attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
This tall variety of Coreopsis tinctoria thrives in full sun and well-drained soils. It is highly adaptable to a range of soil types—including sandy, loamy, or even moderately poor soils—and performs best with average moisture. While somewhat tolerant of dry conditions once established, it is not well-suited for areas with high heat and humidity for extended periods.
Seeds are slender and lightweight, germinating easily when sown directly outdoors. They can be planted in fall in regions with mild winters, taking advantage of natural cold stratification. In colder climates, spring planting is recommended once the danger of frost has passed. While indoor seed starting is possible, seedlings should be transplanted while still very small to reduce transplant shock.
Plains Coreopsis grows quickly and produces vibrant, daisy-like flowers—typically golden yellow with maroon or reddish centers—beginning in early to mid-summer. Deadheading spent blooms encourages a longer flowering period and a more prolific display.
This tall variety is especially striking when planted in mass and pairs well with other native wildflowers in pollinator gardens, meadow mixes, and prairie-style landscapes. It can reseed itself under the right conditions, helping it return in future seasons without replanting.
