Cosmos – Sulphur Dwarf Gold
$2.50 – $66.00Price range: $2.50 through $66.00
The Sulphur Dwarf Gold cosmos thrives in hot, arid climates and is native to Central America. This variety is well adapted to withstand temperatures of 100°F (38°C) and above, making it ideal for warm regions.
Cosmos sulphureus produces smaller, vibrant golden-yellow flowers compared to the larger blooms of Cosmos bipinnatus. These flowers typically bloom later in the growing season, extending the color in your garden when many other plants have finished flowering.
In dry, warm climates, this variety can be planted in the fall to enjoy a prolonged blooming period. In contrast, in colder or more humid regions, it’s best to sow seeds in the spring after the soil has sufficiently warmed. This is because Cosmos sulphureus seeds require heat for successful germination and may otherwise remain dormant or rot in cold, wet soil.
This cosmos performs best in well-drained, moderately infertile soil, as excessive fertilization encourages overly rapid, weak growth that may result in plants falling over. It is a low-maintenance plant that sustains itself well under neglect once established.
In addition to their ornamental appeal, Cosmos sulphureus flowers attract birds, bees, and butterflies, making them excellent for promoting biodiversity in your garden. They also make beautiful cut flowers for indoor arrangements.
While these plants can be started indoors, they generally perform best when directly sown outdoors in their final growing location.
