Hay Pasture Mix

Price range: $228.75 through $922.50

The Hay Pasture Mix is a blend of highly palatable and nutritious forage grasses.   This mix provides strong spring growth that can be cut and baled for hay material or worked into a well-managed pasture schedule and grazed.

Ingredients: Orchardgrass, Timothy, Fescue – Tall (Forage-Type), Ryegrass – Perennial (Forage-Type), Annual Ryegrass

Orchardgrass is a cool-season, perennial bunchgrass valued for its early spring growth, high-quality forage, and suitability for both pasture and hay. Cons:  It is sensitive to overgrazing, may clump without uniform use, and can go dormant in summer without adequate moisture. Lifespan:  4-6 years, sometimes longer.

Timothy: Is a cool-season, perennial bunchgrass prized for its soft texture and high-quality hay—especially for horses. Works well for hay use. Cons: It has poor grazing tolerance, shallow roots, and limited summer regrowth, making it better suited for hayfields than long-term pasture use. Lifespan: 2-3 years, often shorter in pastures.

Tall Fescue: Tall fescue is a long-lived, cool-season bunchgrass known for its durability, drought tolerance, and strong regrowth, making it excellent for pasture and hay. This is a forage-type tall fescue specifically bred for livestock grazing. Cons:  Its coarser texture is less palatable than some other grasses. Lifespan:  6-12+ years (long-lived)

Perennial Ryegrass: Is a fast-establishing, highly palatable cool-season grass ideal for grazing and short-rotation hay. Cons:  It has a short lifespan, poor drought tolerance, and declines quickly in hot, dry summers or under heavy use without overseeding. Lifespan: 2-4 years

Annual Ryegrass: Is a quick-growing, highly nutritious grass used for temporary pasture, spring grazing, or cover cropping. Cons: Not winter-hardy, must be replanted yearly, and competes with slower-growing perennials if seeded too densely. Lifespan: 6-12 months

*Note: Ingredients vary depending on seed availability.  We may not have this seed premixed ready to ship or pickup so please allow a few days for us to have this ready for you. Forage type varieties of Ryegrass and Fescue for pasture grazing are used in this mix.

*Approximate Percentages of items in mix: 55% Orchardgrass, 25% Timothy, 10% Tall Fescue, 5% Perennial Ryegrass, 5% Annual Ryegrass

Best for:  Horses (hay)
            Pros:

  •  Soft, palatable hay mix
  •  Great for horse hay
    Cons:
  •  Lacks durability for grazing
  •  Not as drought-tolerant
  •  No legumes = lower forage value

 Best Regions:

  • Central Oregon – Not suitable
  • Southern Oregon – Only with irrigation
  • Willamette Valley – Ideal for hayfields or light rotational grazing

This traditional hay mix is ideal for horse hay producers looking for soft, leafy forage. Not suited for heavy grazing or dryland systems. Can work for use in a grazing rotation.

The best time to plant is when the soil temperatures are between 50 and 65 degrees F.  These soil temperatures usually occur when the daytime air temperatures are between 60-75 degrees F.
