Poppy – California Purple Gleam

The California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) is a celebrated native wildflower known for its ability to flourish in full sun, dry conditions, and well-drained soils. Like all California Poppies, ‘Purple Gleam’ performs best when sown directly outdoors, as the plants dislike transplanting. In warmer regions it may act as a short-lived perennial, but it is generally grown as an annual in cooler climates due to its sensitivity to frost.

‘Purple Gleam’ is part of the stunning “Gleam” series, prized for its satiny, rose-lavender to purple-pink blooms—an eye-catching twist on the classic orange form. Its luminous petals and soft, blue-green foliage make it a standout in borders, wildflower plantings, and pollinator gardens. Gardeners in USDA Zones 7–10 can sow seeds in fall for early displays, while spring sowing is recommended in colder areas.
