Sunflower – Velvet Queen

Price range: $2.50 through $22.00

The Velvet Queen Sunflower is a dramatic and striking variety, known for its deep red petals that fade outward from a dark black center to tips tinged with orange. These bold, 10-inch blooms grow atop tall, sturdy stems reaching up to 7 feet, making them a spectacular focal point in any garden.

Velvet Queen Sunflowers are drought-tolerant and thrive in full sun with well-drained soil. Their large, seed-rich blooms attract birds, while the flowers themselves make excellent cut arrangements for indoor displays.

For best results, sow seeds outdoors in spring after the last frost. With their dramatic coloration, towering height, and wildlife-friendly benefits, Velvet Queen Sunflowers are ideal for creating vibrant garden displays, pollinator-friendly landscapes, and stunning floral arrangements.

Autumn Beauty‘ and ‘Lemon Queen‘ are other tall varieties of sunflower.  There is also a short variety of sunflower know as ‘Sunspot‘, which only stands between 2 and 3 feet in stature.
