Clarkia – Elegant Light Salmon

Price range: $2.50 through $69.75

The ‘Elegant Light Salmon’ variety is especially prized for its soft, pastel salmon-pink blooms, which glow with a warm, luminous hue. This gentle shade blends beautifully with purples, whites, and deeper pinks, making it a perfect choice for romantic, cottage-style plantings or subtle color transitions in mixed wildflower borders.

Mountain Garland grows 2 to 3 feet tall, particularly in cooler regions like the Pacific Northwest, and may require light support when fully mature. It is well-suited for a wide range of climates, performing reliably in USDA zones 1 through 11, as long as the environment is not excessively dry or humid. The flowers bloom from the bottom of the stem upward, creating an elegant, layered floral column.

As a cut flower, Mountain Garland is both charming and long-lasting. For best results, cut stems when the lower blooms are just opening and buds remain at the top, allowing the flowers to continue opening in the vase.

Plant in full sun to partial shade, ideally in areas with cool evenings and well-drained, nutrient-poor soil. Like its relative Godetia, Mountain Garland does not perform well in rich, nitrogen-heavy soils, which can cause excessive foliage and fewer flowers. It is also not well suited to arid or tropical climates.

Seeds should be direct-sown, as this plant does not transplant well. In zones 7–10, sow in the fall for spring blooms; in cooler zones, plant in early spring after the last frost.

The Elegant Light Salmon variety adds a delicate, glowing warmth to any garden design and is a perfect choice for gardeners seeking a soft yet vivid native wildflower with excellent cut flower performance.
