Coneflower – Purple

Price range: $2.50 through $48.00

Purple Coneflower is a hardy, drought-tolerant perennial native to the central and southeastern United States. Belonging to the Asteraceae family, this well-known wildflower produces large, daisy-like blooms with purple-pink petals and a prominent orange-brown central cone. It is a favorite among gardeners, pollinators, and songbirds alike—attracting butterflies during the blooming season and birds like goldfinches that feed on its seeds in late summer and fall.

In addition to its ornamental appeal, Echinacea purpurea is considered a medicinal herb. It has a long history of traditional use, and today, its root and flower extracts are commonly included in herbal supplements thought to support the immune system. While widely marketed for this purpose, scientific research on its effectiveness remains mixed.

Purple Coneflower thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter climates. It prefers well-drained soil and is adaptable to a variety of soil types, including sandy or clay-rich conditions. In cooler climates (USDA Zones 3–6), seeds can be sown outdoors in spring after the danger of frost has passed, or started indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost date. In warmer zones (7–10), fall planting is also effective, allowing seeds to benefit from natural cold stratification.

As with most perennials, Purple Coneflower typically spends its first year developing strong roots and foliage. Full flowering usually begins in the second year and continues annually with minimal care. This slower maturity is one reason perennial seeds are more costly than annuals—they take longer to produce viable seed. However, their long-term performance and natural ability to reseed make them a sustainable and rewarding addition to native plant gardens, pollinator habitats, and cut flower arrangements.

The broadcast rate for seeding is 40 – 50 pounds per acre.

The seed drill rate for seeding in rows is 20 pounds per acre.
