Gilia – Globe
$2.50 – $39.75Price range: $2.50 through $39.75
Globe Gilia (Gilia capitata), also known as Bluehead Gilia or Blue Field Gilia, is a hardy annual wildflower native to the western regions of North America, particularly along the Pacific Coast. Its native range extends from Mexico through California and the Pacific Northwest, reaching as far north as Alaska. It has also been introduced in parts of eastern North America, where it occasionally establishes in wildflower plantings and disturbed areas.
This species is well-known for its spherical clusters of sky-blue to lavender flowers that bloom atop slender stems. The globe-shaped flower heads give the plant its common name and make it a standout in wildflower meadows and pollinator gardens.
Globe Gilia thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. It is highly drought-tolerant once established and grows well in a variety of soil types, including sandy, rocky, and poor soils with good drainage. Its adaptability makes it an excellent choice for low-maintenance landscapes, restoration projects, and native plant gardens.
This wildflower is attractive to a wide range of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects, adding ecological value wherever it is planted. It typically grows 12 to 36 inches tall and blooms from late spring to midsummer.
Although the appearance of Globe Gilia can vary somewhat depending on growing conditions, it consistently provides a splash of color and texture in naturalized plantings. It is best sown directly into the ground, as it may not transplant well due to its sensitive root structure.
The broadcast rate for seeding is 4 – 5 pounds per acre.
The seed drill rate for seeding in rows is 2 pounds per acre.
