Stampede Green Turf Mix is a durable cool-season lawn seed blend designed for tough, attractive turf that can handle regular foot traffic, heat, and periods of dry weather. The combination of 87% Turf-Type Tall Fescue and 13% Kentucky Bluegrass provides a strong balance of durability, drought tolerance, attractive color, and the ability to gradually fill in damaged areas.

Tall Fescue forms the foundation of the mix, developing a deep root system and providing strong performance under challenging conditions. Kentucky Bluegrass adds spreading growth that can help repair thin or damaged areas while contributing to a dense, attractive lawn.

Stampede Green is particularly well suited to residential lawns, high-traffic areas, larger yards, and locations where durability and lower water requirements are important.

Seed Mix

  • 87% Turf-Type Tall Fescue— A durable cool-season grass with a deep root system, good drought tolerance, and strong resistance to regular foot traffic. Tall Fescue provides the primary structure and durability of the mix.
  • 13% Kentucky Bluegrass— A fine-textured cool-season grass that spreads through underground rhizomes, helping the lawn gradually fill thin or damaged areas. It also contributes attractive color and dense turf.

Best Uses

Stampede Green Turf Mix is particularly well suited for:

  • Residential lawns
  • High-traffic lawns
  • Large yards
  • Full-sun lawns
  • Partially shaded lawns
  • Lawn renovation
  • Overseeding existing lawns
  • Areas where drought tolerance is important
  • Lower-water lawn systems
  • Ground cover and erosion-control applications

Establishment & Growth

Stampede Green establishes well under favorable cool-season conditions. Tall Fescue provides the primary turf structure and develops a deep root system, while Kentucky Bluegrass gradually spreads through underground rhizomes to help fill open areas.

Tall Fescue generally establishes more quickly than Kentucky Bluegrass, while the Bluegrass component develops and spreads over a longer period.

Sun & Shade

Stampede Green performs best in full sun to partial shade.

Tall Fescue provides good adaptability to partial shade, while Kentucky Bluegrass performs best with adequate sunlight. For heavily shaded areas, a lawn blend containing a higher percentage of fine fescues may be a better choice.

Water & Drought Tolerance

Stampede Green has good drought tolerance for a cool-season lawn blend, primarily because of its high percentage of Tall Fescue.

Tall Fescue develops deep roots that allow it to access moisture farther below the soil surface. Kentucky Bluegrass can also develop an extensive root system once established, but the lawn will still require adequate moisture during establishment and prolonged periods of heat and drought.

Regional Fit

Western Oregon — Excellent Choice

Stampede Green is well suited to Western Oregon’s cool, moist climate and provides durable turf for residential lawns. It is especially useful where homeowners want a lawn that can handle regular foot traffic and dry summer conditions.

Southern Oregon — Excellent Choice

The high Tall Fescue content makes Stampede Green a strong choice for Southern Oregon, particularly where irrigation is available during the hot, dry summer months. Its deep-rooted Tall Fescue component provides good drought tolerance.

Central Oregon — Good Choice With Irrigation

Stampede Green can perform well in Central Oregon where irrigation is available. Tall Fescue provides useful drought tolerance, but the region’s dry summers and temperature extremes can still stress cool-season turf.

Eastern Oregon — Good Choice With Irrigation

The mix can be used in Eastern Oregon where adequate irrigation is available. Tall Fescue is better adapted to dry conditions than many cool-season grasses, but consistent moisture may be needed to maintain green summer turf.

Northern U.S. — Good Choice

Stampede Green is suitable for many areas of the Northern U.S. where cool-season lawns are commonly grown. The combination of Tall Fescue and Kentucky Bluegrass provides a balance of durability, attractive turf, and winter hardiness.

In areas with severe winters, local climate and winter conditions should be considered when selecting a lawn blend.

Southern U.S. — Good Choice for the Transition Zone

Stampede Green is well suited to the transition zone and cooler areas of the Southern U.S. The Tall Fescue component provides better heat and drought tolerance than many other cool-season lawn grasses.

In the hottest parts of the South, prolonged summer heat may cause cool-season turf to decline, and warm-season grasses may be better suited for permanent lawns.

Lawn Repair & Self-Repair

The Kentucky Bluegrass component provides natural spreading and recovery through underground rhizomes. This can help the lawn gradually fill small damaged or thin areas over time.

Tall Fescue is primarily a bunch-type grass and does not spread aggressively, so larger bare areas may still require reseeding.

Maintenance

Stampede Green benefits from regular mowing, appropriate fertilization, and adequate moisture during active growth.

Avoid removing more than one-third of the grass height when mowing. Maintaining an appropriate mowing height can encourage deeper roots and help the lawn better tolerate heat and drought.

Planting

Preferred planting seasons: Spring and Fall

Fall is generally the preferred season for cool-season lawn establishment. Spring planting can also be successful when soil temperatures and moisture are suitable.

For best results, prepare a firm seedbed, distribute seed evenly, and maintain adequate moisture during germination and early establishment. Visit our Lawn Planting Tips page for more information.
