Bachelor Button – Dwarf Polka Dot Mix
$2.50 – $22.14Price range: $2.50 through $22.14
Bachelor Button ‘Dwarf Polka Dot Mix’ is a compact, colorful blend of vivid blue, pink, purple, and white blooms that sit atop knee-high plants, making it a perfect choice for borders, beds, and container gardening. This dwarf variety offers all the charm and resilience of traditional Bachelor Buttons in a shorter, more manageable form, typically reaching 12 to 24 inches in height.
Like all Centaurea cyanus, this mix prefers full sun and well-drained soil, and it thrives in a wide range of garden conditions. It is a hardy annual that performs well when direct-sown outdoors, particularly in early spring in cooler climates or in fall for USDA Zones 7–10, where it can overwinter and bloom early in the season. While indoor starting is possible, direct sowing generally leads to stronger, more vigorous plants.
Bachelor Buttons are known for being incredibly easy to grow from seed, making them a favorite for beginner gardeners and experienced growers alike. Their long, sturdy stems and vibrant colors make them excellent cut flowers, and they are also highly attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies. This dwarf variety offers the added benefit of compact, upright growth, reducing the risk of flopping—a common issue with taller types, especially in windy or rainy conditions.
We also offer the taller variant ‘Polka Dot Mix’, along with many single-color varieties, to give you even more flexibility in designing your garden. Gardeners often choose the dwarf mix for neater edges, denser bloom displays, or where space is limited.
SPECIAL NOTE: Bachelor Buttons (Centaurea cyanus) are considered invasive or regulated in certain U.S. regions. They are prohibited in North Carolina, monitored in Washington State, and listed as invasive in West Virginia, Georgia, and parts of eastern Oregon. If you live in one of these areas or are concerned about their spread, you can still enjoy them responsibly. Regularly cutting the flowers for bouquets and deadheading spent blooms will help prevent self-seeding. Monitor their growth closely to keep them from spreading beyond your intended planting area. As always, check with your state’s Department of Agriculture or consult the USDA’s invasive species list before planting.
