 Perennial vs. Annual Growth – What to Expect

Perennials typically do not bloom the first year. Instead, they focus on establishing strong root systems and foliage. You can expect full blooms starting in the second year, with continued flowering in the years that follow. This longer development cycle is also why perennial seeds are often more expensive—they take twice as long to mature and produce viable seed.

To ensure you see color in the first growing season, we’ve included annual varieties known to readily reseed themselves, providing early blooms and the potential to return year after year under the right conditions.

 Special Note for Fall Planting in the Northwest

For the best results in the Pacific Northwest, we recommend starting your fall planting in August. Be sure to water the seeds regularly to help them germinate and become established before winter. Well-rooted young plants are more likely to survive cold conditions and thrive the following spring.

Avoid planting Russell lupines in areas where L. perennis and Karner blue butterfly populations exist, particularly in parts of the eastern U.S.
